When thinking about high school sports, badminton isn’t the first sport that comes to mind.
However at Dos Pueblos, it very well could be.
The Dos pueblos Letterman’s Club brought this unique sport to the Charger sports program. Thursdays at lunch in DP’s Sovine Gym, there are 45 teams that are currently competing in a double elimination tournament. There are two brackets, one for students and one for teachers.
The Letterman’s Club is an on campus organization started by the varsity captains of the Dos Pueblos sports teams. The club decided to bring different sports to DP beyond the typical extracurriculares.
Despite being started by college-bound varsity athletes, the club proves that sports are more than just wins and losses.
Wesley Cooperman the captain of the water polo team and the leader of the Letterman’s Club said that the club decided to start these inter-mural sports where everyone can be included.
For Cooperman, “The club is about [having] some school spirit and fun.”
What’s more, is that the money the club plans on raising for charging athletes for the next tournament will go to charity.
And later on down the road, the club even plans on expanding beyond just their current tournament.
Along with badminton, the club wants to add dodgeball, inner-tube water polo, and ping pong to mix.
Despite the fact that there is no halftime show, official coaches or goldmine, the Letterman’s Club is finding new ways to bring the blue and gold pride to Dos Pueblos High School and give back to the greater community.
