Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Poetry Contest
December 10, 2012
The Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is sponsoring an essay and poetry contest for youth and teens in the Santa Barbara County.
The contest is for ages 6-18 and it is a great way for high school students to veer away from literature based writing taught in school and dive into creative writing.
This year’s theme of Santa Barbara’s 2013 Martin Luther King Day Celebration is “Carrying on the Dream.” Each writing piece should illuminate Dr. King’s legacy and how his dream for social justice is relevant in today’s society.
Submissions can either be in an essay format with no more than 1,500 words or as a poetry entry wich can be no more than two poems of no more than 50 lines each.
Each entry must incorporate the writer’s name, age, and parental or school contact information on the back of every page.
Prizes will be awarded and first prize winners will be invited to read their essays and poems at the Martin Luther King Day Celebration on January 21, 2013 at the Arlington Theater.
First Place~ $100
Second Place ~ $50
Third Place~ $25
